Dr Nerissa Stander and Dr Shona Reese are the primary radiologists at Vet Imaging Specialists. Adding to our portfolio of expertise, we have two other radiologists, Prof. Robert Kirberger and Dr Mika Frances who intermittently work as consultant radiologists for Vet Imaging Specialists.

Shona Brooks is a qualified veterinary nurse with a passion for people and pets. Our nurses deal with all aspects of booking referrals including client and veterinarian queries, insurance form processing and patient care.

Nerissa graduated from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2002 after which she spent 4 years working in small animal practice in the United Kingdom, including an internship at a large multidisciplinary referral hospital, Davies Veterinary Specialists.  She then returned to South Africa to specialise in Diagnostic Imaging and conducted a parallel European College Diagnostic Imaging residency program. After successful completion of her exams in 2010, she became a South African Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging Specialist and then a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. After her residency she took up a post as Senior Lecturer in Radiology at the University of Pretoria. In July 2012 Nerissa and her family relocated to Perth where she set up the Vet Imaging Specialists business. She enjoys teaching and is an accomplished public speaker having extensively presented continuing veterinary education courses and guest lectures. Nerissa has published several papers as well as co-authored and authored book chapters in the BSAVA manuals of canine and feline abdominal and musculoskeletal imaging. Nerissa has a special interest in echocardiography, gastrointestinal ultrasonography and advanced imaging modalities but never tires of looking at radiographs!


Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology


Shona graduated from Murdoch University in 2003, and went on to spend 4 years in mixed and small animal practice in the United Kingdom and Australia. During this time Shona also completed a neonatology (foal) internship at the Marion DuPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, Virginia, USA. Shona then went to the USA to complete a Diagnostic Imaging residency at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology (DACVR) in 2010. During her residency she also successfully completed a Masters degree, with the thesis title, ‘Effect of Sevoflurane Anaesthesia and Blood Donation on the Sonographic Appearance of the Spleen and Haematology in Healthy Cats’.  Following her residency, Shona joined the faculty at the University of Florida as an Assistant Clinical Professor in Diagnostic Imaging. Shona then moved back to her ‘hometown’ and took a position as Senior Lecturer in Diagnostic Imaging at Murdoch University and later joined the Vet Imaging Specialist team. Shona has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals, as well as presenting at conferences. She has also been involved in veterinary continuing education courses. Shona’s professional interests include ultrasonography, and contrast procedures, utilising both radiography and computed tomography.


Veterinary Nurse


Shona qualified as a Veterinary nurse in the UK in 1997. Working in a variety of hospitals predominantly dealing with the usual small animals and also Reptile, Avian and wildlife work. Since moving to Australia in 2001 she has worked in both small animal general practice  and referral practice and has found she has a particular interest in the imaging world of Radiology, ultrasonography  and CT.  She currently works part time for Vet Imaging Specialists.
